There were still Founders alive when Alexis de Tocqueville came to these shores to find that uniquely American thing: voluntary civic associations. This sharp departure from the European model—of reliance on government or royalty to address ills and provide common necessities—proved central to the French political philosopher’s historic, definitional work, Democracy in America. Lest we take this for granted, a scholarly discussion highlighting the institutional and spiritual roots of Young America’s Yankee-Doodle way of loving thy neighbor—a way whose legacy lives on and even flourishes, two centuries hence, in the guise of nonprofits—is a fitting way to celebrate the nation’s special anniversary.
